Ayia Napa is situated on the south-eastern part of Cyprus. Once a sleepy fishing village, Ayia Napa is now most renowned for its lively night life, its excellent choice of shops, restaurants and bars and of course its beautiful beaches. In fact, the coastline either side of Ayia Napa is decorated with arguably the most beautiful beaches found on the island with their fine white sand and clear turquoise waters.
But Ayia Napa is also home to significant history, including its picturesque Monastery which was built around 1500 AD originally as a women's convent, although a cave that lies inside the church suggests it may have been used as a place of worship during a much earlier period. West of Ayia Napa, a short 20 minute walk from the Nestor, the Department of Antiquities has completed the excavation of 19 rock-cut tombs dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
To the east of the tombs a small sanctuary has been excavated while part of an ancient quarry next to it has also been uncovered. Cape Greco, to the east of Ayia Napa, is a distinctive coastline with its imposing 10-metre see cliffs which feature natural caves sculpted by the sea into the rock.
